From the confrontation with the physician and scientist Johannes Kentmann, a ‘door for the stars’ opens in the city of Torgau. It is a wooden work mounted on the floor, whose fretwork and carvings were inspired by the illustration of the naturalistic works of the scholar. An illumination from below, through the voids, will connect our earth with the universe”

Alessandra Donnarumma // ‘Stargate’ Ein Portal in die Geschichte

Nach einer tiefen Recherche über die Stadt Torgau habe ich mein Interesse auf die Figur von Johann Kentmann konzentriert, dessen wertvolle Arbeit als Naturforscher und er Reformationszeit eine prägende Rolle spielte.

Die künstlerische Ausdrucksform, die die Wissenschaft in unzähligen Fällen ganz unterschiedlich begleitet hat, ist die Buchkunst. Die Erforschung von Entmann, sowie von allen anderen Wissenschaftlern, konnten durch die Druckkunst der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden.

Botanik sowie Zoologie, Mineralogie u.s.w. wurden damals sowohl aus einer wissenschaftlichen Perspektive studiert als auch von Künstlern intensiv beobachtet, um sie möglichst detailgetreu abzubilden. Dadurch kann man schon die Künstler als Forscher im ästhetischen Sinn bezeichnen.

Malerei hat mit Naturphilosophie zu tun, notierte Leonardo da Vinci, der das Renaissanceemblem des neuen renovierten Weltbildes verkörpert. Mein Entwurf für diesen Wettbewerb orientiert sich in die Richtung eines Natur-Ornaments, um an die Studie von Kentmann in Torgau zu erinnern.

Alessandra Donnarumma // ‚Stargate‘ A portal into history

After a deep research about the city of Torgau, I focused my interest on the figure of Johann Kentmann, whose valuable work as a natural scientist and he reformation period played a formative role.

The artistic form of expression that has accompanied science in countless different ways is book art. The research of Kentmann, as well as of all other scientists, could be made accessible to the public through the art of printing.

Botany as well as zoology, mineralogy etc. were studied at that time from a scientific perspective as well as intensively observed by artists in order to depict them in as much detail as possible. This means that artists can already be described as researchers in the aesthetic sense.

Painting has to do with natural philosophy, noted Leonardo da Vinci, who embodies the Renaissance emblem of the new renovated world view. My design for this competition is oriented in the direction of a nature ornament, to recall Kentmann’s study in Torgau.
